Disaster
The night was dark but Ovidius had no choice but to press on. The Senate was in chaos- word had reached him of a diplomatic coup of sorts, who was in control was not certain. But, as distracted as he was, he knew he had to push on. With new ships, new crews, and years of waiting, the battle had to be fought now. As his ships continued sailing, horns were sounded as the Carthaginian fleet was sighted off toward the West. The fleet repositioned themselves while oarsmen were yelled at to row faster and faster. Marines readied themselves- some sweating even as the cool night, as cool as a dead body, hung in the air. Archers had their arrows drawn, waiting for the signal to fire at will.
The fleet was smaller than expected but comprised of fast moving ships. Patrol boats Ovidius thought to himself. "Fire at will!" he yelled- he would not allow them to return to their main fleet.
Arrows flung in the air and landed in their targets, sails went up in flames while sailors returned fire. As the ships neared one another, Ovidius ordered his commanders to make preparations for boarding while marines prepared to carry out their Admiral's order. Just as they got in boarding range a loud sound was heard underneath the hulls of many ships.
"Sandbar!", one of the navigators shouted. Covered by the night sky, Rome's larger ships became entrenched on large mountains of sand covered in the ocean. It was high enough to cause many ships to get trapped, but just deep enough for Carthaginian naval patrol vessels to maneuver around.
"It's a trap." Ovidius realized. Almost immediately, arrows from multiple patrol boats began firing. Sailors and marines unlike were struggling to hang on. Water began entering the lower decks and the ships slowly began to sink. Soon, Carthaginian soldiers began boarding, but not just any sailors, but trained killers- only those under Hamilcar's personal command could be behind this risky, but surprise, attack. Ovidius drew his sword and began fighting alongside his fellow soldiers vowing to not leave his ship until every last Roman was off it. With water pouring in below deck, and fire raging above deck, Ovidius was outmatched. He was stabbed through the ribs but kept fighting forward. He was finally grabbed by a few guards who began pushing him off the ship into a lifeboat. Fighting against his own men, he saw Roman sailors and marines being killed or taken prisoner. He thought he saw Hamilcar in the distance but finally pragmatism returned to Ovidius' mind. He allowed himself to escape with the rest of his fleet, vowing to return for the men he left behind.

Crushing Victory
King Demtrius of Illyria did all he could to hold back the legions of Rome commanded by General Superbus. But with his back to the sea where 20 Roman ships remained enforcing a blockade, and 11 legions marching to dig trenches and iege equipment, he had little chance of victory.
Messengers had been sent out to the Macedonians asking for help- he had denied the Macedonian advisers advice that he seek shelter next door until the time was ready to strike back. Arrogant though at his recent successes, he refused, confident that his forces could hold back the Romans. Control had been much more centralized under his rule than the last Queen, but Demetrius had failed at growing the size of his army. As town after town fell to the Roman army, more and more supporters of Demtrius began changing their allegience while thousands crossed the border into Macedon, eager to accept future soldiers and new workers.
As Roman forces began making their arrangements for a siege, Demtrius still felt confidence.
"Koinos." Demetrius called to his military adviser from Macedon.
"Your highness," He responded.
"How long can we hold out?"
The small war council gathered waited for the Macedonians reply. For months now, the capital had been fortified, grain stocks would last a year, enough time it was hoped for Macedonia to send help.
"Your highness, we can hold the walls so long as we hold the city."
For the next month, catapults smashed into the walls and outskirts of the city. Inside, a disorganized attack on lone guards standing watched led Koinos to call back men from the front to guard the central districts. He was overruled though by Demetrius, a man who increasingly became more paranoid of his Macedonian guest.
An envoy arrived from the Romans suing for peace. Koinos urged Demetrius to accept it. Once more, he was rebuffed. Finally, growing riots in the city prompted a munity in the Illyrian army. With fires raging around the city, Demetrius sat on his chair, still thinking he could win.
"The Macedonians will come." he kept murmuring to himself. Noblemen and military officers kept their distance from him. Finally Koinos entered the room.
"Demetrius it's over. Tell the Roma you'll accept his offer of surrender."
"The Macedonians will come." he again repeated to himself.
Koinos looked around at the frightened elite. He swallowed before walking up to Demetrius and stabbing him in the stomach. He then turned around and walked out of the room. Silence followed Demetrius' death. Then the elite followed out of the room.
Rome did not lose a single legion. And while they had control over the major cities, many of the tribes still remained rebellious. It would take time for Illyria to accept foreign rule- that is if it ever will.
