I've been thinking about the problems atWar has been having with low player retention/etcetera, and thought about what could be done to save this game. Then an idea hit me! What do a website that serves college students, a bird company, a clock manufacturer, an aerospace company, and a company that sells personalized tubes all have in common? They all became social media outlets!

Facebook was originally a college website, X was originally called Twitter, a company that sells birds and bird products, mySpace(now defunct, but once was a huge deal) originally built rockets, TikTok originally sold clocks, and YouTube sold tubes.

With this in mind, I propose converting atWar into a Reddit like social media company, where people create threads and post on them, with a focus on military history/strategy, and modern day foreign policy, with a cool game that happens to be on the website. This way, there will always be a core of fans for the game, and a steady pipeline of people who have interests in related topics joining the game as well.

Since the website will be largely converted into a social media platform, the game ranks will have to only be visible in the forums for the game, and a prestige system focusing on the number of posts/threads/helpful replies will have to be introduced. There will also have to be an additional premium subscription for the social media side(perhaps $.99/month and $5/year to go ad free, and have the right to have signatures/profile pictures).

Looking at the season, I kind of have to agree. The algorithm for determining who wins a CW season should probably be reviewed.

Unless Paradox played the ultimate game ever, I don't think that they deserved a higher ranking than a clan with a 47:33 win rating. It's not great, but also not bad enough for this to seem warranted.

This isn't an ideas and suggestions post, but I would imagine that creating an algorithm for this might be needed. It would look at the 10 clans with the most games(or perhaps the x% of clans with the most games), and reduce somewhat significantly the score of clans who do very well, but played a fraction of the 10 clans' games, and increasingly lower penalties as clans get closer to those scores. Alternatively, maybe just put in a heavy penalty for playing under 5 games, a moderate one if you play under 10, and a very light one if you play under 25.

Perhaps these penalties could only be in place to affect the leaderboard, or perhaps the top 10/20 clans. Penalized clans that get kicked below the threshold, but were originally above it(or were penalized due to being brought into the threshold when the previous clan was penalized) would be given ranks based on who did better before the penalties, and the remaining clans would just get their ranks below them.

This is my suggestions after spectating ONE GAME:
--Section 1:Gameplay
1. I've noticed that it is basically necessary for the prisoners and zombies to cooperate to beat humans. It should be more balanced, with all three sides being equally powerful, or just make prisoners and zombies be on the same team so people don't screw each other over. I feel like having three equal sides introduces a very interesting political game where temporary alliances can be made and broken based on the balance of power.
2. It seems like the humans' job is just to wall everything and wait for reinforcements, which is fine, but I don't like that after they get reinforcements its basically a guaranteed win-there should still be a small chance where the other teams can win, for a more interesting endgame.
3. The developers seemed to only like playing on the human side-I only watched one game, but it seemed like they don't really like the other two sides, which could be a problem for balancing.
--Section 2:The Map
Keep in mind I was not able to view the recruitment and income of the cities, so I will focus on the map itself.
1. There is only one entrance into the building. Perhaps some side entrances could spice up the game a bit.
2. All the human capitals are in one building, furthest away from the zombies. This should not be the case. I suggest Mayor's room for north wing and either Armory III or Dining room II for south wing.
--Section 3:Units
suggestions? anyone? I haven't played this map before so I can't comment on this.

Personally I started playing this game when it was friend-groups friendly, like haxball or world of tanks. except that afterwind (the name back then) had something different, with amazing level or intensity that is not there nowdays. if you seek intensive games you'll have to be prepared to lose a lot, which is one factor.

The second problem is the game is no longer ideal for group games, most of the vetreans who can actually teach new players to play, were busy in competetive and scenarios, and world map were filled with sp farmers, while beginner room is lurked by sociopath rank 16's second account who take pleasure in beating new players.

Another reason it is not the same is the removal of flower power walls and old tb system. While it made the game more competetive and somewhat fair, it made ally fagging too powerful, and in small maps most of your chances are depended on your 2-3 first turns, if your expansions worked and if you managed to avoid critical rushes. and if you have latejoiners or allyfags against you then you no longer have the tools to deal with them.

Finally, the arrival of scenarios and development of the competetive scene has made the game far more interesting to the 5% of vetreans and pros, but made the rest of the game helpless or clueless, if a new rank wants to find his spot in the game, he actually has to stop playing what most of the new players like to play, or even can play with their upgrades (world maps), and let's not even start to talk about rankisms and players who kick premium rank 7s (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

That is the reason I believe a new AI will benifit 5% of the players, but if we want the rest of the 95% players (new players, who join and leave on routine, in the past 7 years, instead of finding their spot in the game), we need to develop new maps and gameplay (that includes upgrades, turnblocks, new alliances system) which will encourage teamplay and allow new players to enjoy this game with their friends without the assured prospect of being completly annhiliated because the new game mechanics was designs for pros and allyfags.

I mean, for years mods had to compromise between the needs of scenarios and mapmakers and the needs of the competetive community, and the result is some psychopathic inbred game mechanics that made this game look like mayhem for anyone else, we need to find third way, even if it means to create option to choose between 2-3 different gameplays that will suit different needs.

I would like to take this opportunity to relay the results of the recent poll. For those of you who did not participate, the poll question was, 'What is your preferred turn duration.' The response was overwhelmingly in favour of 48 hour turn games. Thanks to all who participated and 48 hour turns it is:

12 Hour turns: 20%
24 hour turns 25%
48 hour turns: 55%

This version of Pax Romanus features a maximum of two (2) allies and two (2) initial countries.


2. Game Protocols

Please observe the following game protocols:
• Do not attack other players on turn one (1). Give other players a chance to 'set up'.
• Always be considerate of other players. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.
• Do not leave a game by timing out. If you have lost the game, surrender.
• Take your turn in a timely manner. Don't be the last player to take your turn every turn.
• Players are no longer restricted to their home countries on turn one.


3. Settings


• Starting funds are $25,000
• Capture player country for two (2) turns
• Maximum number of initial territories that can be selected is two (2)
• Maximum number of allies is two (2)
• Maximum number of players is twelve (12)
• Maximum number of turns is two hundred (200)
• Minimum rank is five (5)
• Turn duration is forty-eight (48) hours


4. Player's Invitation List

The Player's Invitation List is managed as follows:

You will be added to the Player's Invitation List if:
• You are a new coalition member.
• You have joined a coalition game (coalition and non-coalition players).

You will be removed from the Player's Invitation List if:
• You have been inactive in atWar for 10 days or longer as of the game date.
• You request to be removed. All requests are final. No dithering please.
• You have been banned from coalition games.
• Niki Coalition Leaders and Officers are de facto members of the Player's Invitation List.

I think AWs saving grace will be as Dave said AI.
AW should "freeze out" and just prepare to install some good AI into this game, once lets use WW1 for example, there is a sufficiently good AI to play countries like Serbia, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania games will become 10x times easier to fill and player retention rate will go up.
I am honestly quiet hopeful.
